Simple and Effective Tips to Keep Resolutions and Art Goals

Are you struggling to keep up with your New Year’s resolutions? You’re not alone. Many people start off strong, but eventually stop making progress toward their goals. The problem isn’t a lack of passion or capability; it’s that big lifestyle changes require a community. In this blog post, I’ll explain why communities are essential to maintaining your resolutions and share tips on how to find and join one.

When we make big resolutions like learning a new skill, exercising regularly, or starting a new diet, we need to make significant lifestyle changes. Often, we try to add these changes to our already busy lives, but it doesn’t work. We might last a few weeks or even a few months, but eventually, we get tired, skip a day, and gradually lose momentum. We start to believe that it’s hard, we’re too busy, and we can’t do it.

To make big lifestyle changes, we need to find a community of people who are living that lifestyle, whether online or in real life. When we become part of a community, we can share our successes and failures, get advice, join challenges, make friends, and even rivals. The community can encourage us and motivate us to keep going when things get tough. We can build a new lifestyle together, and that makes all the difference.

When I was in art school and right after I graduated, I was part of a real-life art community. All my friends were artists, and we were always creating and talking about our creations, brainstorming together, and bouncing ideas off each other. Art was such a part of our lives that wherever we went, we had our sketchbooks and were drawing. We played drawing games at parties. If I was having an off day, I would see my friends creating something amazing and be inspired, or I would think, “Oh no, they’re getting better than me; I need to keep painting!” I learned so much from the community of artists I surrounded myself with, and I credit them for helping me build a strong foundation.

Finding a community is easier than you might think. You can check out local art centers or community colleges for art-related resolutions. They often offer figure drawing nights for walk-ins or other programs. Attend art fairs and gallery walks, and start talking to people, asking questions about their artwork. Then, start building your art community.

Online communities are abundant, too. There are Facebook groups for just about anything. Search for groups in your area or those related to your resolution. When I moved to Korea, I searched for Facebook groups and found an art community. I was able to participate in some group shows with them. Finding a group to post your work, share your ideas, and comment on others’ art can help you build a good art community completely online.

My biggest tip is to start searching and following people who are doing that lifestyle on the social media platforms you use. I use Instagram and YouTube, so I search for, follow or subscribe, and like the content related to my resolution. That way, the algorithms for those socials will start suggesting more content like that to you. Keep interacting with that content, start liking and commenting on the posts, and read the other comments and comment on those comments. You might even start to recognize some of the other commenters; then, check out their profiles and follow them. This will remind and encourage you to keep up with your resolution, and you’ll start to build relationships with some of the content creators and commenters.

In the end, having a community is crucial for keeping up with your New Year’s resolutions. When you’re surrounded by people who encourage and support you, you’ll have someone to give you a push when you need it, assist you when you struggle, and cheer you on when you succeed. To stay on top of your resolutions, seek out a community of people who share your goals and can provide support, guidance, and inspiration. You have various options to choose from, such as local groups, online communities, or social media networks.

Bear in mind that building a community requires time and effort. You may need to attend events, join groups, and engage with others actively to find the right match. However, the rewards of being part of a supportive community are well worth it. By joining a group, you’ll feel more responsible for your objectives and encouraged to keep striving for them. You’ll also learn from others, gain fresh perspectives, and establish connections that may last a lifetime.

Therefore, don’t give up on your resolutions just yet. Instead, make it a priority to discover and become a part of a community that can help you stay on track. With their assistance, you’ll be able to accomplish your objectives and make long-lasting positive changes in your life.
